Fic for Stargateland challenge 12
27th-Jan-2012 10:01 pm
Us with Nichelle Nichols at Fedcon
The challenge was to write a Stargate fic for a song. I used 'It's not over' from Chris Daughtry to showcase Rodney's desperation to change things in SGA's 'The last man'.

It's not over (a part of me is dead and in the ground)

I was blown away what could I say
It all seemed to make sense
You’ve taken away everything
And I can’t do without
I try to see the good in life
But good things in life are hard to find

He hadn’t even done something out of the ordinary, he was just standing there, in the corridor, thinking about how unfair life was, how it had taken away everyone he loved. And how he was going to loose Jennifer now. He started thinking about the moment where it all went wrong, right after Sheppard disappeared. At that point he even laughed a bit at the irony that John would die much later than everyone else of his friends, having been sent into the distant future with no possibility to return.
And at that moment it hit him. There was a possibility. A possibility to turn all this around. He had been so excited that he couldn’t let go of that idea, even when Jennifer told him to live his life and not waste it on this. His life was already over. There was no way forward, just back.

Taken all I could take and I cannot wait
We’re wasting to much time […]
My life with you means everything
So I won’t give up that easily’

He started to work on this project day and night, every free minute he got. He worked as fast as he could, but still it was never fast enough. He told himself that time didn’t mean anything for this, that it didn’t matter if he finished it in five or fifty years, but after a few years he actually dreaded not getting it done in his lifetime.
So he worked even harder, used every cent he got to buy the necessary equipment. Every time he came close to giving up he thought about John and Sam, about Ronon and Teyla. And of course about Jennifer. And that gave him the strength to carry on.
Until finally he got it right.

Well I try to do it right this time around
Let’s start over
I try to do it right this time around
It’s not over

Coming back from Atlantis, he felt as if the weight of the world had been lifted from his shoulders. Now the only thing he could do was wait. Suddenly he wondered how it would feel to just fade away, to never even have existed. Strange, all these years, and he never really thought about what he would do after it was finished. He always assumed he’d just stop. Everything would just stop.
But it didn’t and so he visited Jeanie and his niece and her children. And holding his little nephew on his lap his last thought was of his younger self saving Teyla, saving Jennifer.
Doing it right this time around.
